About the iPhone
Introducing iPhone 3G. With fast 3G wireless technology, GPS mapping, support for enterprise features like Microsoft Exchange, and the new App Store, iPhone 3G puts even more features at your fingertips. And like the original iPhone, it combines three products in one — a revolutionary phone, a widescreen iPod, and a breakthrough Internet device with rich HTML email and a desktop-class web browser. iPhone 3G. It redefines what a mobile phone can do — again. Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and has entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone. iPhone App Review - Recorder

There are at least eight audio recorders available for the iPhone so the search for the best-of-breed is on.  Having tried almost all of them and read the reviews, my recommendation is Recorder by Retronyms. Record memos, discussions, interviews, and ideas on your iPhone. Use it as a voice recorder or a sound recorder. Record for seconds or hours. Extremely simple one button interface produces quality audio files.

Version 3.0 features the transfer of recordings over Wifi (great for large files) and improved Emailing of files.  The Wifi feature is especially refined in it’s simplicity.  Tap Wifi Synch and you are taken to a screen that provides you with an IP address to access the recordings on your phone.  Enter this IP into any web browser and voila, you have access to all your recordings in an easy to use web interface (images below). One button simplicity, excellent audio quality and convenient access makes Recorder by Retronyms the current best-of-breed voice recorder for the iPhone.

The New York Times calls Recorder ““single-button simplicity” and an App Store Reviewer states “This is, by far, the BEST dollar I have ever spent! I am in radio and now will be able to record short actualities or feature snippets, the e-mail them for editing and broadcast. They have managed to get surprisingly good quality from a little phone mic. It’s easy to record, preview, rename, and E-MAIL the .aiff file. This is the kind of apps I imagined getting from the App Store. Professionally made and reasonably priced!”

Retronyms, Inc.’s Recorder is available for purchase and download now from the iTunes App Store for $0.99, supports AIFF and requires an iPhone with version 2.0 operating system.

iPhone App Review - Tuner

For those who love Internet radio and always wished they could listen to it on the go, now there is Tuner by Nullriver, Inc. for the iPhone 2.0. Tuner allows you to listen to any streaming Internet radio broadcasts right on your iPhone.  Find stations by searching Nullriver’s stream database by keyword, genre or a top 500 streams list. You can even enter a direct URL for streams not in their database.  Any stream can then be bookmarked for later listening.

The interface and user experience are excellent for (as of this post) a version 1.2 application. All stream and track information is displayed along with an attractive spectrum analyzer. The search function works well and the top 500 list is great for finding new music.

Tuner works on WiFi, 3G & EDGE. However, the quality of the audio is directly related to your connection speed. Go WiFi and you will get perfect 128k+ bit rate streams. With a 3G connection, 96k & 128k bit rate streams sound amazing without any digital static. Yes, EDGE will restrict you to streaming lower bit rates and you will occasionally hear pops and dropouts.  Like most of the first generation iPhone applications I have tested, it does have a tendency to quit here a there.  A small price to pay for listening to your favorite commerical-free Internet radio on the beach this summer.

Nullriver, Inc.’s Tuner is available for purchase and download now from the iTunes App Store for $5.99 and supports AAC, MP3, PLS, M3U on the iPhone and iPod Touch.
